Don’t attend Nyeri fete, Nyagah tells PM

Plans to install ODM leader and Prime Minister Raila Odinga as a Kikuyu elder continue to draw varied reactions.

ODM Pentagon member and Cooperatives minister, Mr Joseph Nyagah, has joined a group of Raila’s allies from Mt Kenya region who oppose the ceremony slated for next month.

Speaking yon Monday, Nyagah said he had advised Raila not to attend the ceremony that had created uproar in parts of Central Province.

By attending the ceremony, he said, Raila might play into the Kibaki succession politics unfolding in the region that has renewed traditional rivalries between Kiambu and Nyeri.

He said Raila needed to rise above such rivalries since what was important was to deliver on his promises.

“I am among a group of his friends who have advised him against the ceremony. We think it is important for him to work for all Kenyans and to deliver on the promises,” said Nyagah.

He said he did not expect Raila to attend the ceremony even though the PM had not commented publicly on the issue since it was floated.

Businessman-cum politician, Peter Kuguru, stoked controversy when he and former Attorney-General Mr Charles Njonjo, announced plans to install Raila as a Kikuyu elder in Nyeri on July 20.
