The head of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress party (ANC), Jacob Zuma, arrives in Kampala today for party-to-party talks with leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The ANC said Zuma would hold talks with the ruling NRM leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni, during his visit from today to Friday.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the ANC spokesperson, Jessie Duarte.
“The visit takes place against the background of a programme by the ANC to revive and deepen party-to-party relations between the movement and parties on the continent, and generally to improve collaboration on critical matters facing Africa and other parts of the developing world.”
The meeting follows similar party-to-party fraternal visits to the MPLA in Angola and recently to the Indian National Congress in India and the Communist Party of China.
Zuma will be accompanied by ANC officials Siphiwe Nyanda, the peace and security committee chairperson, Collins Chabane, the constitutional committee chairperson, Sisi Tolashe, the Women’s League secretary general and Andile Lungisa, the ANC Youth League deputy president.
“Some of the highlights of the programme will be the delivery of the first memorial lecture by the ANC president in honour of the late Ugandan national hero and revolutionary, Brig. Noble Mayombo,” Duarte said.
“Zuma will also visit former ANC camps in Kaweweta and pay his respects at the graves of fallen combatants.
The site has since been converted into the Oliver Tambo School of Leadership.”
Zuma is seen as the front-runner to replace President Thabo Mbeki when his term ends next year.
In December, Zuma ousted Mbeki as head of the ANC, which has ruled South Africa since multi-racial elections in 1994.
The presidential hopeful, however, is facing corruption charges and has said he would stand down as ANC head if convicted.
