JKUAT students go on the rampage
BY BERNARD MOMANYI
Students of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have gone on the rampage, setting ablaze vehicles on Thika road.
The students are protesting against high prices of food stuffs and other commodities at the institution’s canteen.
Several motorists plying the busy highway were stoned during the strike Wednesday morning.
Police shot in the air and lobbed tear gas to disperse the rioting students who had lit bonfires on the highway.
“We have dispersed them and the situation is now back to normal. There is tension at the institution but our officers are still maintaining security along the highway,” Central Provincial CID chief Sebastian Ndaru said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Truck loads of anti-riot police officers from Thika and Ruiru police stations were stationed outside the institution to maintain security.
By 1pm, the students had retreated back to the institution but tension was high.
Meanwhile, two suspected gangsters were shot dead in separate robbery incidents in Nairobi early Wednesday morning.
One of the suspects was gunned down on Uhuru Highway when he allegedly robbed a pedestrian off his mobile phone and money.
Central divisional Police chief Tito Kilonzi said the suspect was in the company of two other men who escaped.
“This is a notorious gang that has been terrorizing pedestrians during early hours of the morning,” he said.
He said they had recovered the mobile phone and money stolen from the victim.
Another robbery suspect was felled at the Jeevangee gardens at about 10 pm.
Kilonzi said the suspect was killed after he was allegedly found vandalizing a vehicle that was parked on Moi Avenue.
