Gwassi: MP’s vision for Gwassi
By Jack Nduri
Gwassi MP, John Ng’ong’o Mbadi, believes it takes more than money to win an elective office.
He says among the 21 opponents he beat, including former MP Zaddock Syongoh, were financially endowed individuals.
“The victory came as a surprise to my family and I. I did not think I could emerge the victor among a pack of prominent people,” he says.
Education: Went to Kokuro in Migori between 1987 and 1990. Later joined University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Commerce. Graduated in 1996. Holds an MBA from Maseno University and CPA (K).
The MP says he is glad his constituents refused to be lured with money. He says instead they voted for ‘progressive leadership and development’.
Mbadi has a daunting task to fulfil his pledges considering that Gwassi, hived of the expansive Mbita constituency in 1997, is one of the poorest constituencies despite its resources. The fish industry, the major source of livelihood, is at its lowest point due to lack of storage facilities. Middlemen have taken advantage of the poor storage and roads to exploit fishermen.
Voters look at the 37 year-old MP with great expectations. They want to see how the MP turns round Nyanza’s most rugged and remotest constituency, where roads are mere ruts.
Deforestation of Gwassi hills, the source of water, has led to persistent water shortage. More than a decade ago, the hill was considered a tourist attraction but its allure has diminished due to deforestation.
The constituency is also home to the Ruma National Park. Residents hope the MP will link with the Kenya Tourism Board to promote tourism.
The MP says he will work with the Government and civic organisations to develop the constituency.
Despite receiving more than Sh113 since the inception of the CDF programme, residents says there is little to show for the money.
“With CDF and other funds we can go a long way in improving the living standards of our people,’’ says the MP.
He says youth and women projects are among his priorities.
The MP says he will ensure the three main roads in the area are improved to make the constituency accessible.
“I also plan to use some CDF money to provide clean water, construct health care facilities and improve education infrastructures,” he says.
The MP has submitted a proposal to the District Development Committee for adoption to have Gwassi constituency - just like her neighbour Mbita– classified as hardship area. This will make the constituents benefit from hardship allowances and other privileges.
He is married and has two children.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWe wish you the best when making a honourable journey to bring a change in your constituency. There are alot of exploited resources when used properly can develop the area very fast.
The best thing is work hand in hand with all government departments aggressively ,and do not neglect both local and international NGOs. Your presence should be felt at home more than
Nairobi.
There are also a number of Gwasi people in the diaspora whom you should contact to make them part and parcel of development in the area.Do not forget to work with gwasi people who also living in different areas within east africa.
Open your door to everybody who is out to bring development in the area. There are a number of luos who fear other heavy weights because overshadowing tendency. This behaviour has brought about underdevelopment in many luo areas. If possible you should a void party leadership because it creating alot enemies.
Concentrate in development of your area, and active participation in the parliament. The electrates will judge you mainly on those two points.
So far, your participation in parliament is appreciated by everybody including kenyans
in the diaspora. We are seeing a very reasonable leadership in you.Try also do not fall victim
of double takers in the areas who are just gossipers from day one to end.
Dear Hon Mbadi,
Two years are almost over, the impacts of CDF has not been felt more so in Central division. The only provincial girls’secondary school, Moi Sindo Girls sec school is not connected to the main electricity passing next to the school.Mheshimiwa our daughters and our sisters require electricity in school to excel in their exams. Please supplement the efforts the parents and the school board has put to enable our school shine. What the school requires is less than Kshs500,000 out of over Kshs40 million the government allocates to our constituency as CDF annually.
Hoping to hear from you.

A voter from Gwassi constituency
Hon. Mbadi,
Use CDF wisely, do not exclude any group or clan, focus on social services especially education and health, use the office to lobby NGOs link with youth groups, farmer groups and women group.
Lastly involve contituents from whatever clan and learn from respectable past leaders like Hon. Nyakiamo.
Remember, you still have a life to live after being an MP. To live it well, take care of your reputation and image.
Respectfully, work with government departments
Muheshimiwa, two and a half years have gone since we elected you,i believe in this time you have given the gwasi people your all and i believe the best is yet to come in the remaining two and a half years. my advice to you is
1.remain development focused as you were when you started your term.
2.remain the leader we elected and do as we requested you, that is unite the gwasi people and give us direction.
3.involve the gwasi people fully in your development agenda, let them have ownership of it.
4.involve the professionals from gwasi, based on there experience and knowledge, they always fill left out.
5. come up with a techical team made of afew professional to help you make critical decitions.know whom you can trust and deligate dutiies to.
6.for the cdf projects, close monitor the supliers and contractors you are dealing with and the non performer ,chack the out of our list, they will mess up your name for nothing.
7.use factial approach in making key desitions on matter affecting your constituence.
8.continual improvement,by planing, doing what you have planned, checking what you have done, and taking action on failed issues should be your guiding principle.with this muheshimiwa,i believe the gwassi people will give you another chance to represent the in parliament come 2012,rember we only have 2 and a half years to go…
Hon,Mbadi people will talk a lot and all this should not stop you from doing your things the way you planned for them..I not going to agree with you by so saying gwassi is the poorest, right now gwassi is a district and we can organize our self for even a better life.what we should do is only kicking away nepotism, this is a long gone thing that if we Gaussian if we forget then things will be ok.wa we uru weche mag ma jaka dibuorao mara ma en jakamwenda this will never help.here i am, very few can help one from another clan that he/she will sit on where he is not supposed to, surely if we continue like this, will we develop?we must change and work us a team to eradicate poverty in our own area.i like the way our MP is working and we should give him another chance and easy time to work.We shold not be grady for what we never worked for and things will be as smart as ever
Dear Hon
This to reply what you have done and what you intend to do to gwassi constituents.Miy concern is will you achieve all this if I personally i have applied 9for cdf bursary for fee but was in vain and now i cant get my results because of that.To make matters worse i can’t even apply for any job coz i don’t have collage certificates.Plz if u can help may you help me.

Finally plz help me to clear my collage fees.
Mheshimiwa,am impressed by your participation in parliament as a debator. This brings us somewhere as Gwasi people. But Hon.its not enough we want to see real felt development. And involve all and sundry.Form caucuses in every major town in kenya for the Gwassi people for development NOT for politics
We want to see tanks of water on the hills. We are ready to come in.Kwani?
Rev.Dalmas Oleko
Good luck with everything!
Dear mheshimiwa.
I just want to congratulate your upon your election and the great impact you have had in politics especially at the national level.
ias a friend i would like to wish you and the people of gwassi all the best as you endeavour to bring tangible progress to your people.
Kudos
Hi Mheshimiwa,
Its a great pleasure to have a change of guard in a constituency like it hapenned in Gwassi. It comes with alot of exitement & uncierty for some who think continuity may fade for personal ingredients & projects ownership.
An MP’s success is believed to be communal, the entire community should own you, projects & have confidence in themselves by seeing their proposals implimented including those which were in existence before your regime.
Lastly, if posible avoid clan divisins brought up by close family & alies apointments entirely to the limited positions, CDF alocation and projects positioning within the constituency.
I believe that would generate good performance to both you and the constituents.
Walter
