THE Central Organization of Trade Unions yesterday insisted that the employment of fresh teachers should not be a preserve of the government.

COTU secretary General Francis Atwoli said that it is the Teachers service commission which should be tusked with the responsibility of hiring new teachers.Atwoli said that the current tussle between the government and the Kenya National Un ion of Teachers over plans to hire interns was uncalled for in the first place.

Speaking in Khwisero Atwoli joined KNUT in opposing plans by the government to hire some 12,000 interns.KNUT has moved to court in order to oppose the impending plans.Atwoli said teachers should be hired in permanent terms and not on temporary basis.

He at the same time called on the government to give members of the provincial administration more allowances.Atwoli said the group sometimes works at odd hours and is exposed to various risks. He said some of them even wake up at night in the name of duty.

The trade unionist once again slammed the Kazi Kwa Vijana programme. He said the funds should be channeled through the provincial administration for better management. Atwoli impressed leaders to work instead of politicking throughout. He blamed the local leadership for being insensitive to the plight of the voters.
